History of The Lincoln Township Library
On 10-13-1920, the library was opened to the public, housed in the little corner room of the old City Hall, which stood on the site now occupied by the Community Auditorium. Miss Alice Banks (Mrs. H. J. Bornholdt) was the librarian and served for several years. Instrumental in the organization of the Lincoln Township Library was the local Parent Teacher Association, which secured the first levy for library purposes. This levy was made at the annual township meeting in March 1917. successive annual appropriations were made, and at the meeting in March meantime, contact had been made with the Nebraska Public Library Commission at Lincoln, which supervises and assists in the organization of tax-supported libraries, and the proper foundation laid. The following were appointed members of the library board: F. E. Anderson, who became chairman; Mrs. P. H. Peterson, secretary; Frank Lundgren, A. L. Nyquist and Miss Rose Banks. The library had many homes one was located on Hampton Street, two doors south of the old post office, later occupied by Nelson Produce and now torn down there it remained until the fall of 1935. The annual meeting of March 1920 authorized the setting aside of funds for a building, thus establishing a practice which ensued for a number of years. In 1935, a site owned by the village was transferred to the township and , with sufficient funds on hand, supplemented by F.E.R.A. labor the present building was erected. Lincoln Township Library is an active and vital part of the community and is looking forward to the future. We plan to grow and to serve the community!
